Description

NSRI (USA), Inc., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NYK Line, and is their primary IT provider. NYK Line is a Japanese company, and the world’s largest transportation and logistics provider.

As Director of Technology, I had responsibility for global IS security standards & technologies, global WAN / LAN / data center networking, server infrastructure, and enterprise application architecture.

As Director of Global Information Systems, I had overall responsibility to develop an organization capable of high-speed web development, and for the actual development and integration of initial infrastructure and application releases, including www.nykline.com.

Accomplishments:

  • Led the transformation of a mainframe development organization into a first-class web development and application hosting organization. I grew the organization from approximately 30 to 55 people, conducted extensive hiring and training, and instituted new processes (including RUP-like methodology), procedures, tools, and platforms for application development, testing, quality assurance, deployment, and operations (in-house hosting).

  • Rolled out the first two releases of our major new e-commerce product family (www.nykline.com) into our own hosting environment in our Seattle data center. This required us to develop the new Java/Solaris/Oracle-based products, and integrate them with our existing Smalltalk/Windows/DB2/IMS-based products. Application security was built into each application and integrated with database security, plus an additional web-layer Single-Sign-On (GetAccess from Entrust) was added. Applications were further integrated using an early SOAP implementation. We leveraged our mainframe based Operational Data Store (i.e. dynamic data warehouse) and static data warehouse (AS400) by front-ending with IBM Smalltalk and Communications Server, running SNA APPC (LU6.2) connections to IMS/dc (mainframe) to DB2. This preserved more than 1 million lines of COBOL applications and a huge mainframe data warehouse, yet allowed for intuitive web front ends.

  • As senior management technical leader on the Enterprise Model (now OSCAR) project, I saved the company $12 million negotiating one software acquisition, and $16 for server and SAN hardware by creating 5 distinct technology architectures, including SUN (large and small), IBM RS6000, HP PA-RISC, and HP-Itanium, and hosting an open competition between vendors.

  • Led an international team developing new corporate security organization, standards, architecture, policies, and procedures for NYK’s global WAN, LAN, servers, and desktop/laptop operations. Led a comprehensive 4-month firewall product evaluation for global firewall standard.

  • Led a large team in an effort to migrate our existing customer-facing Windows NT web and application servers in our Seattle data center to a Linux/Solaris platform. This involved not only re-hosting all web software onto Solaris, and application software onto Red Hat Linux, but also re-architecting the data flow, security, shared data storage (NAS & SAN), and backup / recovery sub-systems to take advantage of multi-tier server architecture.

  • Led a complete redesign of our Seattle data center layer 2/3 networking to improve security, performance, reliability, and recovery. This involved designing multiple overlaid networks for primary operations, backup/recovery, and storage-area-networking (SAN); each having multiple distinct security zones (DMZ’s), and supporting numerous technologies (including CISCO, NetScreen (Juniper), Sidewinder, Solaris, Linux, AIX, Windows, OS390, OS400, TCP/IP, Token Ring, EMC Symmetrix & Clarion, IBM NAS, STK Silo, etc)
