The need for compression has been apparent for some time. Even with a high-speed connection audio is hardly acceptable for streaming over the internet. This requirement of high performance is satisfied by MPEG layers. Each uses the concept of perceptual coding for removing less significant components of for smaller size. MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer3) has a compression factor of 10 and hence a faster downloading speed maintaining the same quality.
